Charities Profit From HBOS Charity Credit Cards
Last year saw three UK charities receive over £1.5m in donations from Halifax and Bank of Scotland credit cards.
The cards are proving increasingly popular among consumers who would like charities to benefit from their spending habits, as opposed to receiving loyalty benefits themselves.
The three UK charities that received a share of the donations were Cancer Research UK (CRUK), the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).
These types of credit cards have seen many charities in the UK benefit in the form of donations from the card provider. The last 17 years has seen HBOS donate over £19.5m through its charity cards, to worthy causes.
The cards work when the charity of the customer's choice receives a donation of £20 from HBOS when the customer uses their Halifax or Bank of Scotland credit card for the first time. Subsequent spending on the credit card results in the charity receiving a 25p donation from HBOS for every £100 the customer spends on their credit card.
The charities aren't the only ones to benefit from these cards as their customers receive competitive rates and offers. The Halifax charity credit card offers customers 0% interest on purchases and balance transfers for the first six months, with 3% balance transfer fee applicable. When these offers expire, cardholders benefit from a competitive APR of 16.9% (variable).
Ken Stannard, head of cards at HBOS, said: "Charity cards are an excellent way of helping worthy causes and customers benefit from great deals in the process. We are really pleased with the amount raised by our customers last year and are hoping to continue this good work into 2007."
HBOS also contributed further to charities by raising more than £4.5m in 2006 through their colleague Million £ Challenge and matched funding.
